del.icio.us

When I worked at a larger library with four branches, often I would try to remember some site I had used before. All computers had a different list of favourites. Now with delicious, I feel I can my own carry my favourites list around with me and access it when needed.

Blogs again

I have reached the end of the online training and am looking over my blogs to see if I qualify for the competition. Have noticed that my first blog did not answer the required questions . Online learning was just a little overwhelming at that time. I struggled at the beginning, but after some valuable advice from a colleague, I persevered - and so glad I did.
It has given me a taste of what tools are available on the web. So now when library patrons come to me and says they are having trouble with blogs, myspace or podcasts, etc I know I have tried it and hopefully I may be able to help them. Previously, I had not a clue as to what they were talking about.
Also at the beginning I laboured over writing blogs, but now, quite like it.
I would be nice, while overseas to write a travel diary for family and friends to read, but I doubt that I'll have access to a computer.

Social Networking

As with all previous methods, I think the main advantage of web based tools is in advertising and marketing of libraries. The same applies to social networking. I know many teenagers use My Space etc. For me , personally, I do not want to spend more time than is absolutely necessary sitting at computer, so therefore I will not be signing up to My Space. I have too many other jobs and interests.

RSS Feeds

To complete the course, I have now revisited RSS Feeds. I have done what is required, but I am still unsure how they could be useful for libraries. When I return from holidays I will spend some time looking at others' comments, to see it they help.

Google docs.

Hi my name is Irene , I was just wondering how we could use google docs at work. Sounds great for newsletters. But we don't have one. Then I had a brain wave. Many people hate being nominated as the minute taker at a staff meeting. What if a google doc. was created for that meeting and each speaker was responsible for later summarising their own topic.

Mashups

I love playing with graphics. I am rushing through this online training as I have a deadline . On the 18th May I leave for China. So glad I'm up to mashups. I was wanting to leave a copy of my itinerary for my family at home, as I will be travelling with a friend. And see, (opposite) what I've been able to do with my new knowledge. Would love to spend more time on this segment, but it may have to wait till I return from my trip.
At least I have had a taste and can revisit it any time later.

Podcasts

I love hearing authors speak about new or old titles. I'm wondering if I'll be able to find any as podcasts. They always insipire me to read. If there were some, perhaps they could be listened to in reading groups in the library. Many older folk (members) don't have access or knowledge of this technology.
